California State Route 96 - The Bigfoot Highway
Route 96 follows the Klamath river into the Klamath forest. It is a slow going curvy road dense with trees and hillsides that display some of the most gorgeous views during the spring wildflower season and extraordinary colors in the fall.
This is not a fast-paced drive, its slow and scenic. If you have a deadline to meet, then I would suggest a different route. If you have time to spare and like me, enjoy slow going scenic country roads then you will appreciate the scenic drive.
It’s well known among motorcyclists because of colors in fall and the curves that test your riding skills.
The route starts in Yreka, Ca, if you’re staying at Quigley’s you’ll already have a brief experience of what the road is like. As you travel further into the Klamath forest, you will stumble upon small towns like Happy Camp where you can stop for a bite or a snack. We recommend that you stock up at our store before heading out, just to be safe, and be ready to stop anywhere along the river to enjoy a break.
Get ready to visit rural mountain towns in Northern California, while the road is used quite a bit by locals to travel back and forth, you won’t see a lot of tourist traffic because of how slow it can be, in our view, this is perfect! You’re on a vacation, slow down and take in the surrounding country, it’s well worth the wait!
